How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size in Raleigh, NC

Choosing the wrong dumpster size is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make on a renovation or cleanup project. Rent too small and you're stuck paying for a second haul. Rent too big and you're overpaying for space you don't need. Red Hawk Dumpsters serves the entire Triangle — Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Angier, and beyond — with three roll-off sizes designed to cover every residential and contractor project.

The 13-yard is our smallest and most affordable container, starting at $245. It's the right call for single-room renovations, garage cleanouts, small deck teardowns, and light landscaping debris. It holds roughly five pickup truck loads and includes a 4,000 lb weight limit — enough for most light residential jobs.

The 20-yard is our most popular size at $285. It's built for kitchen and bathroom remodels, roofing jobs up to about 35 squares, whole-house flooring replacements, and large garage or estate cleanouts. If you're not sure between sizes, the 20-yard is almost always the right answer for a typical Triangle homeowner project.

The 30-yard is our largest container at $395. It's designed for new construction, full interior demolitions, commercial tenant improvement projects, and large roofing jobs over 35 squares. At 22 feet long, it holds approximately 12 pickup truck loads and includes a 6,000 lb weight limit — the most forgiving of the three.

Rule of thumb: When you're between sizes, go bigger. The cost difference is small — the cost of a second haul is not. Call (919) 823-4295 and we'll size your project in 60 seconds.

Sizing Tips by Project Type

Roofing

A square of shingles weighs 200–350 lbs. A 20-square roof tear-off can run 4,000–7,000 lbs total. Most roofing jobs need a 20-yard; large roofs or multiple layers need a 30.

Kitchen Remodel

Cabinets, tile, drywall, countertops, and old appliances from a full kitchen gut-out typically fill a 20-yard. A galley kitchen or smaller might fit a 13.

Bathroom Remodel

A single bathroom — tile, tub or shower, vanity, toilet, drywall — fits in a 13-yard. Multiple bathrooms or a cast iron tub should move up to a 20.

Flooring

Hardwood, tile, and carpet from a full house floor replacement is heavier than it looks. Budget a 20-yard for multi-room projects; a 13 works for 1–2 rooms.

Deck Removal

A standard 200–300 sq ft deck teardown fits in a 13-yard. Large decks, multi-level structures, or composite decking with concrete footings should go to a 20.

Cleanouts

Garage: 13-yard. Full basement: 13–20. Whole house or estate: 20-yard minimum. Hoarder homes with heavy furniture and appliances: call us first.

Dumpster Size FAQ — Triangle, NC

What size dumpster do I need for a bathroom remodel?

A single bathroom remodel — tile, fixtures, drywall, vanity, toilet — fits in a 13-yard dumpster. If you're doing two or more bathrooms at once, or if one includes a cast iron tub, step up to a 20-yard.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof replacement?

Most residential roofing jobs (under 35 squares, single layer) fit in a 20-yard. Larger roofs, multiple shingle layers, or jobs mixing roofing with other demo debris should use a 30-yard. Shingles are heavy — a 20-square tear-off can easily run 4,000–7,000 lbs.

Is a 13-yard dumpster big enough for a garage cleanout?

For most garage cleanouts — boxes, furniture, old tools, yard equipment — yes, a 13-yard handles it. If your garage has heavy machinery, large amounts of concrete, or decades of accumulated items filling floor to ceiling, consider a 20-yard.

What's the difference between the 20-yard and 30-yard?

The 20-yard holds about 8 pickup truck loads and has a 5,000 lb weight limit. The 30-yard holds about 12 loads with a 6,000 lb limit. The 30-yard is typically used for new construction, full home demolitions, and large commercial jobs. For most residential renovations, the 20-yard is sufficient.

What if I pick the wrong size?

If you go too small, we can swap out the container — though this adds a pickup and delivery fee. If you go too big, you just paid a bit more upfront. That's why we recommend sizing up when you're on the fence. It's almost always cheaper than a second haul.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

Our standard rental period is 7 days, but we're flexible. Need more time? Call us and we'll work with your schedule. We're a local company — we don't charge per-day fees the way big-box rental services do.

Do you offer same-day dumpster delivery in Raleigh?

Yes — same-day delivery is available when you order by 11 AM, subject to availability. Call us at (919) 823-4295 to confirm before booking online.
